About Dr. Ashok Rajgopal

Padma Shri recipient Dr. Ashok Rajgopal is a highly experienced and renowned knee surgeon.
He has performed approximately 60,000 arthroscopic surgeries and over 39,000 total knee replacement surgeries.
The doctor performed the first minimally invasive joint replacement surgery in India, the first bilateral total knee replacement surgery, and the first virtual total knee replacement using patient-specific instrumentation.
He was the first surgeon to use gender-specific knees in India.
His educational qualifications include an MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, in 1974 and an MS in Orthopedics from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 1979.
Dr. Rajgopal also completed an MCh in Orthopedics from the University of Liverpool in 1983.
He earned a Fellowship from the International Medical Sciences Academy (FIMSA) in 1996 and a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in General Surgery in Edinburgh, UK, in 2010.
He routinely uses advanced trabecular metal (TM) implants, which are cementless and known for their high strength-to-weight ratio.
He is part of an elite group of international knee surgeons who are designing new knee implants, including the “PERSONA” knee system introduced in India in 2013.
Dr. Rajgopal is an esteemed member of several prestigious organizations focused on advancing knee surgery techniques, such as the Indian Arthroscopy Association, the Indian Orthopaedic Association, and the Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society.
