About Dr. Pradeep Chowbey

Dr. Pradeep Chowbey is a pioneering laparoscopic surgeon in New Delhi, known for performing one of the first laparoscopic cholecystectomies in North India.
With over 50 years of extensive experience, Dr. Chowbey has made his name in minimal access and bariatric surgery.
His expertise includes gallbladder stone removal, hernia surgery, obesity surgery, appendix surgery, scarless neck surgery, and endoscopic surgery.
He is well-versed in performing surgical procedures to treat piles, fissures, anal fistula, and thyroid and parathyroid disorders.
Dr. Chowbey has performed over 98,300 surgeries, earning a place in the Guinness Book of Records and the Limca Book of Records for twenty consecutive years (from 2000 to 2020) as the first endoscopic surgeon to perform the most minimal access surgeries.
He has trained more than 20,000 surgeons worldwide in minimally invasive techniques.
In 2012, Dr. Chowbey pioneered the SPIDER technique for virtually scarless, minimally invasive surgeries in the Asia Pacific.
He completed his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from Rani Durgawati Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur, in 1974 and 1977, respectively.
Dr. Chowbey holds various national and international fellowships, such as FRCS, FIMSA, FAIS, FICS, FACS, FIAGES, and FALS.
In 2007, he received a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from the Governor of Madhya Pradesh and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jabalpur.
He has been internationally trained at prestigious institutions like Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, John Hopkins Institute, and Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital, enhancing his expertise in surgical oncology.
He has been instrumental in developing and promoting minimal access, metabolic, and bariatric surgery in India.
Dr. Chowbey pioneered MAFT (minimally invasive fistula technology) in the Asia Pacific.
He has been honored to operate on Shri K R Narayanan, former President of India (2001), and His Holiness the Dalai Lama (2008) for gallbladder surgery.
Dr. Chowbey has received multiple honors, including the Padma Shri in 2002 for his contributions to minimal access surgery and honorary memberships in various international hernia societies.
Recognizing the growing issue of obesity in India, Dr. Chowbey played a significant role in advancing bariatric surgery, benefiting numerous patients and establishing a support group for obese individuals.
Dr. Chowbey operated on the World’s heaviest teenager (BMI 92 kg/m2) in April 2018.
He is an esteemed teaching faculty member and has participated in over 700 national and international workshops on laparoscopic surgery.
He has authored more than 300 scientific research papers in prestigious international and national journals and contributed to critical medical texts published by Springer, Jaypee, and Elsevier.
He is a founding designee of the International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery Program by SRC, USA. He has held numerous prestigious positions, including President of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society and Asia Pacific Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Society.
He was a founding member of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons and has served as its President.
Dr. Chowbey is an honorary laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeon to the President of India and an honorary consultant for laparoscopic surgery to the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
He represents India as Governor of the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia.
