About Dr. Prof. Mohamed Rela

Dr. Mohamed Rela is highly regarded in liver transplantation and HPB surgery.
With 42 years of experience, he has greatly advanced medical science and patient care.
Dr. Rela has performed over 6000 liver transplants.
His ground-breaking transplant procedure on a five-day-old baby earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.
He has pioneered the split liver transplantation technique, where one cadaver liver is split and used for two individuals.
He has pioneered auxiliary liver transplantation and mono-segment liver transplantation for neonatal transplants on a global scale.
Dr. Rela earned his medical degrees, MBBS and MS, from the University of Madras in 1982 and 1987, respectively.
He obtained further training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, UK, receiving FRCS in 1988. In 2013, he was honored with an honorary DSc from The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
During his impressive career, Dr. Rela has received several awards, such as the Scroll of Honour from The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University in 2012 and the Dr. Madhanagopal Oration and Medal from Madras Medical College in 2010.
In 2005, he was appointed professor of liver surgery and transplantation at King’s College, University of London, recognizing his notable contributions to the field.
In an article by Top Masters in Healthcare Administration, he is said to be the most innovative pediatric surgeon alive.
Dr. Rela is involved in prestigious medical groups, such as the British Medical Association (BMA), the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS), and the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain (AUGIS).
